A large scale, self actualised work driven by desire. 'Pink' seeks to communicate everything the complex colour embodies and signifies through a journey of movement and texture.
I really enjoyed and valued making this instinctive, large scale piece following some reading and exploring of artists and colour. In future, I would consider my physical needs and abilities more, as mixing large volumes of paint was incredibly hard on my hypermobile joints and did lead to significant pain and reduced mobility afterwards. I as always, valued input from my fellow fine artists whilst is the process, and I also appreciated the flexibility from my lecturers within Coleg Menai to allow me to step back from the brief of the day to create I work I felt compelled by.
Whilst creating this work I looked at many artists for inspiration including:
Robert Ryman - for his use of single-colour and the physical journey/interaction of medium in visual jazz.
Tracey Emin - for her use of the colour pink in confessional autobiographical works, pink as intimate and vulnerability. Emotional exposure as power.
Jenny Saville - for her use of a broad spectrum of pinks in the abundance, sometimes graphic, confrontational depictions of flesh and human form. She describes her paint as 'liquid flesh'.
Judy Chicago - for her use of pink in stories of birth and creation, women in history and culture.
David Hockney - for his coded and signalling use of pink in his queer depicting art during a period of criminalisation in the UK.
Protesters for their use of pink such as Guerrilla Girls and Pussyhat Project.
