Made in response to the brief 'Draw these two sculptures. Now draw the space between them. Only use monochrome.'
These large scale paintings were a significant undertaking over multiple weeks. I used many different medias in the process including making slip from reclaimed clay and dyeing it with drawing ink to paint 'bricks' on the painting. Creating this piece felt significant.
When making this work I didn't know what it would become or the scale of the final piece. The brief was given to us in stages, with the individual sculpture pictures coming first, and the connection later. When we were told to place them apart with the aim to draw the space between them we were told to be ambitious. Needless to say, I was.
The majority of this work involved using homemade tools (paintbrushes and other equipment on the end of long sticks) whilst stood at the top of a ladder. It was incredibly physically demanding and not well thought out! However, I would not change anything about the process. I learned a lot, and was given an opportunity to inspire further ambitious pieces within the studio. I am grateful for having the naivety, enthusiasm, and confidence to create this work.
Artists I looked at whilst creating this piece included:
Tony Cragg - for his use of lines and the shown process of structure, movement and form
Richard Long - for the concept of taking a line for a walk, very apt within this project
Alberto Giacometti- for his use of texture in making sense of physical space
